New Pathways for Fathers and Families
The New Pathways for Fathers and Families provides job coaching, financial advice, and relationship and parenting seminars to residents in Clark, Estill, Madison and Powell counties.
The objective of the program is to improve the economic, financial, parenting and relationship well-being of fathers in the service region.
Gateway Community Services Organization located in West Liberty, Kentucky will be providing the same services to Morgan, Montgomery, Rowan, Menifee and Bath counties.
THE FIRST COMPONENT of the New Pathways for Fathers and Families program is to improve the parenting skills of the fathers in the service region. Staff will be teaching the 24/7 AM Dad curriculum which is recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the OFA. Staff are able to teach the curriculum in various segments as long as the participants receive 12 hours of training. The most common sessions are: (a) six- two hour sessions, (b) four- three hour sessions and (c) two- six hour sessions.
Staff will accommodate to the needs of the hosting organization and/or the participants involved. The training may be provided at the host organization’s facility, KRFDC's facility or a neutral site. The topics that will be discussed are:
- What it Means to be a Responsible Man
- Health Issues Fathers Commonly Face
- The Role a Father Should Play in a Child’s Life
- How to Properly Discipline a Child
- Getting Involved in a Child’s Life and the Community
- Working with the Mother of Their Child (both if they are still together or separated)
THE SECOND COMPONENT of the program is to improve the relationship skills and financial literacy skills of the participants. This curriculum blends the PREP/Within Our Reach 8 curriculum (recognized again by the aforementioned Federal agencies) and Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance program. This component will instill participants with skills of how to effectively communicate to their spouse, significant partner and/or the mother of their child while developing conflict resolution techniques. The component will also teach participants how to:
- Develop budgets (regardless of income)
- Alleviate debt
- Work with their partner to resolve financial conflict
- Teach their children about money
- How to save money for significant purchases and retirement
This component has to be taught in six two hour sessions.
THE THIRD COMPONENT of the program is to provide job coaching for those that are currently seeking or will soon be seeking employment. Staff will assist participants in:
- Preparing/updating resumes and cover letters
- Improving interview skills and participating in mock interviews
- Completing job applications
- Identifing jobs that fit their interests and abilities
- Developing plans for addressing barriers to employment such as child care and transportation
This component will culminate in each participant being coached on conducting a thorough and successful job search.
Participation in the New Pathways for Fathers and Families program is voluntary. These services are available to all eligible persons regardless of race, gender, age, disability, or religion. All services are free to those that participate in the program.
Each component previously mentioned will make someone both a better father and spouse/partner in a myriad of ways.
