Achieving Stability

In the life of any family or individual, disaster can strike: illness, job loss, death of a loved one, loss of a home. When living on the edge – with little or no savings or support systems to help during hard times, families can fall into terrifying crises from which they see little hope of recovery. KRFDC has designed its crisis assistance programs to enhance opportunities, strengthen families and provide incentives for self-improvement and economic independence.

At each of the agency’s four Outreach Offices, staff provide information and referral services as well as access to emergency financial assistance programs (when such programs are available) for basic necessities including food, shelter, and utilities. Even during times when it doesn’t have access to emergency assistance funds, KRFDC staff are available to offer referrals to other community resources that may be able to respond to immediate needs. KRFDC staff can assist in making plans that may help alleviate future crises.

KRFDC uses government funds, seeks donations from businesses and churches and conducts grassroots fundraising efforts to provide for the basic needs of low income families. As those basic needs are met, many low income clients return to donate their time to help others. And as families move out of poverty, they often return the kindness and understanding of an outreach worker by donating money to help those who they once were.

KRFDC provides LIHEAP assistance every fall/winter at our Outreach Offices. LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a program designed to aid qualifying low-income households in the payment of a portion of their residential heating costs for the winter heating season.
