Energy Assistance
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) supports families by providing energy cost assistance to ensure their safety and well-being.
LIHEAP, a federally-funded program, assists low-income households with their home energy bills, ensuring they can stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This assistance reduces the risk of health and safety issues, such as illness, fire, or eviction.
LIHEAP operates across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Indian tribes or tribal organizations, and U.S. territories, providing vital support to those in need.
Our Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides vital support for eligible households struggling with energy bills. LIHEAP operates through two main components:
Subsidy Component
Crisis Component
Both homeowners and renters responsible for their heating bills with a low or fixed income are eligible.
To qualify for energy assistance, households must meet the following basic eligibility criteria:
Additionally, crisis applicants must be within four days of depleting fuel, have received a disconnect or past due notice from the vendor, or have received an eviction notice for non-payment from a landlord when heating costs are included in rent.
Subsidy applicants are required to submit:
For Crisis applicants, the following documents are necessary:

If you’re unable to apply in person, you can authorize someone else to apply on your behalf. Contact KRFDC for assistance in this case.
Qualified participants will receive an energy assistance voucher that covers electric, gas, kerosene, propane, or wood services. These vouchers will be paid directly to the primary or secondary heating fuel vendor. The benefit amount depends on the household’s poverty level and heating fuel type. All eligible households will receive assistance until LIHEAP funds are depleted. Note: LIHEAP assistance availability is subject to change.
