Filing a tax return is important, even if you think you’re not required to file. You may be eligible for valuable tax credits, and we’re here to help you access them. We recommend United Way of the Bluegrass for free, trusted tax assistance.
Services are available year-round for individuals and families who meet certain criteria:
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), also known as the Earned Income Credit (EIC), is a tax benefit for low-income working individuals and families. It was created by Congress in 1975 to reduce the burden of Social Security taxes and encourage work. If the credit is more than the amount of taxes you owe, you may receive a refund.
To qualify, you must meet specific requirements and file a tax return, even if your income is below the usual filing threshold.
Claiming the EITC does not affect eligibility for certain public benefits, including Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), SNAP (food assistance), low-income housing, or most Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) payments.
Please note that proof of identification will be required at your appointment.
Appointments are scheduled by calling 211 only. Services are available Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
