Services for Veterans

Our SSVF staff is committed to providing comprehensive services to low-income Veteran families in or transitioning to permanent housing. Covering 21 Kentucky counties, including Bath, Breathitt, Clark, Clay, Estill, Jackson, Laurel, Lee, Madison, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Rowan, Russell, Wayne, and Wolfe, we ensure our Veterans receive the support they need.

One-on-One Assistance for Veterans

Our dedicated case managers provide personalized guidance to Veterans, focusing on establishing a solid foundation for stability and success. From connecting with local landlords to facilitating employment services and assisting with benefit applications, our case managers tailor their support to address the individual needs of each Veteran. We employ a variety of strategies to overcome housing barriers, including those stemming from historical and systemic challenges faced by marginalized groups. At the heart of our approach is ensuring that participant choice remains paramount.

To be eligible for our services, Veterans must meet military, income, and housing criteria. Required documents include proof of Veteran status, proof of income, and evidence of a housing crisis, such as an eviction notice or a statement from a shelter.

Veteran Status:

• Provide a DD-214, HINQ report, or VHA card.
• Applicants must have a discharge status other than “Dishonorable.”

Proof of Income:

• Copies of the previous two paychecks/paystubs of all employed individuals in the household.
• Current award letters for VA benefits, pensions, disabilities, and other household income that benefits anyone in your household.

Proof of Housing Crisis:

• Eviction notice and corresponding lease.
• Statement from a shelter or transitional housing program.
• Signed statement if homeless in unconventional places.

We follow HUD income guidelines, assessing each application on a case-by-case basis. Deposit assistance is available once every two years, and we do not provide assistance with mortgage payments or homeowner-type repairs.

Stage 1: Verifying Eligibility

• Conduct an initial eligibility screen.
• Gather necessary documents with staff assistance.

Stage 2: Alleviating Your Housing Crisis

• Work with a Case Manager to address housing issues.
• Access temporary financial assistance if needed.
• Help the household access community resources.

Stage 3: Supportive Services Provision

• After resolving the housing crisis, receive case management services.
• Access VA services, public benefits, employment opportunities, housing counseling, and more.

Stage 4: Exit from Program

• SSVF is not a long-term program; tenure depends on need and funding availability.

Our services extend to Bath, Breathitt, Clark, Clay, Estill, Jackson, Laurel, Lee, Madison, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Rowan, Russell, Wayne, and Wolfe counties.

KRFDC also offers additional human service programs, including energy assistance, parenting skills, financial management, job and career advancement, and responsible fatherhood, benefiting Veterans and their families in the project. Participants will be engaged through outreach to our network of partners, including the VA, homeless shelters, DCBS, food banks, churches, and other entities.
